Jonathan Polkest was born in 1952 on the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall. His work embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, relief work, printmaking, construction and photographic techniques. Whether working in Cornwall or abroad, Polkest's paintings are set in places that resonate with layers of meaning regularly investigated through the eye of an artist with a deep and rich curiosity about a particular cultural heritage, recording a time and place - a history where past and present conspire.
Jonathan Polkest states: "In Cornwall my subjects are very important for what they represent and the continuity of their surprising evincements through formation, through weather and social interaction. I take objects and regenerate a contemporary meaning, objects from validated history and non validated logic I have worked on the same projects, in a cyclic revision. Everything I do eventually re-emerges until it is fully complete".
Polkest's paintings are fluent, dynamic and exciting, resulting from a working method that is both challenging and unique, provoking symbolic curios into a narrative or landscape that is thought provoking, skillfully executed, and aesthetically seductive.
