The scene depicts the hoisting of Admiral Lord Nelson's famous signal "England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty" to his fleet before the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805.
Nelson, Captain Hardy and HMS Victory's other officers are seen on deck (the bottom margin of the picture includes facsimiles of their signatures) as their men prepare to fly the signal flags.
An original photogravure, published c.1880 and signed by the artist, may be available. Please ask.
