The present massive stone keep of Dover Castle was built by King Henry II in the late 12th century to replace one built by William the Conqueror soon after 1066. The castle stands on Dover's towering and famous white chalk cliffs above an important harbour on the shortest sea route between Britain and Europe (Dover-Calais). It includes the tallest example of a Roman building in Britain, a first century Roman lighthouse originally standing 24 meters tall.
