The first Arundel castle was founded as a smaller version of Windsor Castle on Christmas day, 1067, just a year after William the conqueror's Normans conquered Britain. Arundel Castle was built by Roger de Montgomery, one of William's cousins and one of his oldest friends, to protect the Sussex coast from sea raiders and to receive troops from Normandy. Originally built in timber, it was remade in stone and extended from 1170 to 1190. A mighty stronghold, it has been the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk for more than 850 years. In 1643 the castle was extensively damaged when Cromwell's troops bombarded it with cannon installed in the tower of nearby St. Nicholas's Church.
