Maureen Flaherty is a British contemporary artist living in Portsmouth.
Her paintings are realist both in style and subject matter. Previously, she has concentrated on people as a theme but her current work is focussed on places where people have been. She is interested in evoking the atmospheres she encounter in many of the castles and forts around Portsmouth, where she recently moved. The atmospheres that intrigue her are often bleak, austere and most of all empty. She likes the feeling of past entities that can linger in a place. It is these ghostly, imagined or sensed atmospheres that she is aiming to communicate to viewers of her work.
