Off the Wall is on!
This summer’s exhibition at Artists Harbour is Off The Wall … an eclectic mix of mainly maritime-themed paintings and prints by artists from the local area and around the south of England.
It’s running from now until September and the pictures on show include beautiful seascapes by Chris Wood and huge yachts by rising young star Robin Eckardt.
Chris’s acrylic painting on canvas of Portsmouth’s famous Spinnaker Tower has been used for the exhibition poster. It’s the best painting we have seen to date of the iconic south coast landmark. You can see and buy the original or a print.
Robin sold 14 big pictures at a recent Affordable Art Fair in London and her latest works include billowing spinnakers and boiling wakes that look so 3D you feel you can touch the ridges of the waves – and you can!
Robin’s aggressive use of bright acrylic paints includes building up the texture of the image by mixing in plaster of paris and pva glue until the surface of the paint stands high off the canvas. Her rendering of the foaming waters under a racing yacht is incredibly evocative. Visitors to our gallery twitch their fingers in front of her canvases, and often find it impossible to resist touching them. Her next stops are London’s West End… and New York! Not bad for someone not yet 25.
Robin’s works are available in our webshop.
Sculptures by local stars of steel and clay John Mellows and John Phillipson provide depth to the exhibition.
We have sold John Mellows’ sparkling stainless steel yachts and abstract albatrosses soaring over the globe not only to customers around the UK but also exported them to North America and the Middle East. John has provided trophies and beautiful one-off pieces as trophies for many major regattas including Cowes Week and the major yachting magazine awards. Even the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s imposing Albatross & Globe sculpture presented to Dame Ellen MacArthur after the worldwide acclaim for her Vendee Globe non-stop round-the-world second place at the age of just 24 was a John Mellows piece.
You can see John Mellow’s latest Albatross & Globe sculpture plus some of his other pieces on our website, and you can of course buy his pieces direct from our website, tax-free if you are outside the EU.
John Phillipson’s ceramic birds are sometimes loveable, sometimes scarily realistic, but always beautifully captured. In the gallery we are currently showing a pair of his argumentative seagulls, some charming terns, an absolutely stunning scarlet ibis, an imposing cormorant and a steel-legged, weatherproof, 4ft.-high heron designed to withstand the seasons in a garden fishpond. You can see and buy John Phillipson’s birds on our website.
